Energy and curiosity

Business events are often the catalyst for creative collaboration, argues Bryan Holliday.

Story by Bryan Holliday

Whilst reading a newspaper article that analysed the characteristics of our major cities, I was struck by a phrase that the author applied to Melbourne: “Energy and Curiosity”. What a wonderful way to describe a city. It could also be associated with the very best business events.

We all have to be curious to stimulate innovation in any walk of life. Acceptance of the way things are retards growth and development. For centuries scientists have tried to unravel the mysteries of the world by constantly asking questions and by testing their theories by conducting endless experiments. Successful entrepreneurs often describe how they endured a number of failures before achieving success. Thomas Edison who is credited with the invention of the light globe had over 1000 attempts before he created a working prototype.

One of the oft reported characteristics of Australians is that we are exceptional at inventing things but hopeless at making money from them. Many of our very best products only achieve commercial success when the patent rights are sold, usually to overseas operators. We need national and personal energy to capitalise on our brain-power.

There is increasing evidence that business events are often at the forefront of change; be it medical, scientific, commercial or humanitarian. It’s equally well-known that no single event can guarantee that an intellectual legacy will be left in the host city. However, one thing is certain: if business events were not held collaboration and cooperation would not be promoted and change would stagnate. We all need both curiosity and energy to succeed.

Business events are often the catalyst for creative collaboration, argues Bryan Holliday.
